VanBuren Program History

The VanBuren Professorship endowment was established November 1, 1985 by the Estate of Fred N. VanBuren. Mr. VanBuren was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture, a life-long farmer and an avid supporter of both The Ohio State University and the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. He saw the need to combine "book learning" and practical experience. His gift to The Ohio State University was intended to provide support for an applied program of farm management at Ohio State that would benefit students of farm management as well as farm clientele.

Income from the endowment supports the program of a professor in farm management. Income from the endowment may also supplement salaries of outstanding scholars, enrich the curriculum of farm management classes or fund other activities that will significantly enhance the teaching of farm management for the benefit of students and farm clientele. In recent years the VanBuren professorship has sponsored a multidisciplinary farm management club; travel for club members for farm tours in Kentucky, Texas, California, North Carolina and Florida; sponsored the annual VanBuren lecture by an internationally recognized farm management scholar, and has supported various Extension workshops and applied research projects.

Previous VanBuren Professors:

Dr. Bernie Erven 1986 - 1990
